From 2002 to 2005, I led the Family Health International IMPACT project in Timor Leste, a nation rebuilding after years of conflict. Our team worked with local partners to build a national HIV/AIDS response from the ground up. We focused on targeted behavioral interventions, peer education, and health worker training to reach key populations-including female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and uniformed services personnel. By establishing non-stigmatizing voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and STI services, and collaborating with faith-based organizations and government ministries, we laid the foundation for sustainable HIV prevention and care in a challenging environment.
Challenges in business are a given, but it’s our response to them that defines our trajectory. Looking beyond the immediate obstacle, there lies a realm of opportunity and learning.
